What to do with your old bed

Whether your existing bed is no longer sleep worthy or you simply fancy an upgrade, buying a new bed often has the problem of what to do with your old, unwanted bed. Not only are beds often difficult to remove from bedrooms, but they can’t exactly be thrown out with the normal rubbish. Disposing of your old bed needn’t be a hassle, as all it takes is a little bit of organisation and pre-planning and the transition from your old bed to your new one should be seamless.

Follow these steps to help you remove your old bed:

Removing your old bed

Working out how you are going to manoeuvre your bed out of your bedroom is often the toughest part of removing your old bed. Some beds can be dismantled easily, while others will take more effort, however the majority of beds can be broken down to make removing them through door frames and down stairs easier. Usually, beds can be dismantled into the header, footer, and two sides. The slats may come off individually, or be strung together with material to allow them to be collected up in one large bundle. Often the bigger the bed the harder it is to remove, as such single beds are normally the easiest while super king size are usually the most difficult.

Disposing your old bed

Disposing of your old bed requires planning. You will need to contact your local authority to ensure that your old bed is picked up and removed. Alternatively, if your local authority doesn’t provide this service, there are companies that will collect your old beds for a price. Another option is to check to see if your local authority runs a recycling centre where you can dispose of the old bed.

Donating the bed frame

If your old bed frame is still in good condition you could consider passing it on to a friend or family member who need to replace their existing beds. Bed frames can be an unnecessary expense for many families, so passing on your unwanted bed could help act as a stand-in until they are ready to buy a new bed. There is also the possibility of using organisations, such as Freecycle, to pass on your old bed to a new home. If you are giving away your pre-loved bed, don’t forget to bag up any screws, nuts, bolts, allan keys or other important parts so they don’t get lost or misplaced.

When to remove your old bed

It is important to ensure that you remove your old bed at the right time, or else you could find yourself without a bed to sleep on for a long time. Ideally, you would arrange to have your bed removed on the same day as the new bed is due to arrive, or the day before. You will need to ensure that the old bed is out of the room prior to your new bed arriving or else it will take longer for the new bed to be installed.

Planning is the key to removing your old bed quickly and without hassle. Ensuring you follow our tips will also help to make the process a lot easier than it first appears to be.
