How to create more space out of a small bedroom

Whatever size home you have it is more than likely to have that one small bedroom that is an awkward shape and size. These rooms are often difficult to decorate as they can easily become overpowered by colours, furniture and accessories. As well as this, they often serve as a child’s bedroom or the guest room, making them a magnet for clutter. No matter who your small bedroom is for, these tips will help to make it look more spacious.

Choose a light colour scheme

Colour is the key to creating an illusion of space. When decorating a small room it is important to choose light and soft colours. Colours such as white or softer and lighter shades of blue, yellow, pink or green will help to make a room look larger. Generally patterns should be avoided as they make spaces look smaller, but if you are opting for patterned wallpaper choose ones with very simple designs and again in lighter colours.

Buy the right size bed

The bed is usually the most dominant feature of a small bedroom so it is vital that a bed is chosen that isn’t too large that it overpowers the room. There are a range of sizes of single beds available from large singles (105cm x 190cm) to small singles (75cm x 190cm) and choosing the right size will help it look proportionate to the size of the bedroom. If the bedroom has high ceilings and is being used as a child’s bedroom, consider buying bunk beds as a way to provide extra sleeping options while still not taking up too much space in the bedroom.

Add clever storage

Even just a little bit of clutter can make a small bedroom look smaller. Having plenty of storage is the key to keeping clutter to a minimum. There are many clever storage solutions available today that combine furniture with storage, for example beds with underneath draws built in. These are ideal for small bedrooms as they make optimum use of the space available without overpowering the size of the room. Another way of keeping small bedrooms clutter free is making good use of every space within the room, for example adding corner shelves to hold books.

Keep it minimal

A minimal bedroom will look larger than one with a lot of accessories and furniture. With small bedrooms keep to as few accessories as possible and always choose ones that are in proportion to the bedroom – a large widescreen television for example will make the room look a lot smaller than a smaller size version. If adding wall art or pictures, again make sure that they are proportionate to the size of the room and usually smaller ones will make the room look more spacious.

The general rule when decorating small bedrooms is to keep it as simple as possible. A light, bright and minimal small bedroom will look a lot more spacious than one that is full of oversize furniture and clutter and decorated using dark, strong colours.
